I Was Jumping Up And Down!

August 9, 2011 – A few weeks ago I opened the cutest bags of tamales I have ever seen in the mail… wait, I have never seen a bag of tamales sent in the mail – have you? Probably not. Truthfully, this was my first spin at eating tamales, let alone famous Texas Tamales from Houston.

The Texas Tamale Company formed thirty years ago when they created LARD-FREE tamales in Houston, Texas. Since then, they have grown from a street-side cart to being served at VIP parties and professional sporting arenas.

The most important thing to know about these delicious tamales (and any tamale for that matter) is to discard the wrapper after heating. Yes, I took a bite of the wrapper and realized quickly that it was not a “crust”. Once I shrugged that mishap off, I dug my fork into the doughy beef center with the perfect blend of Texas spices. I added some salsa for dipping and the perfect lunch was formed.

The Texas Tamale Company sent me every flavor tamale to taste and I would have to say my favorite so far is the beef. Other flavors that I received were the chicken, black bean, spinach and pork. I can imagine how happy someone would be to receive these tamales in the mail. I was jumping up and down opening all the packages and I knew they were coming.

The Texas Tamale Company just launched a fresh new website making shopping simple. They also carry a line of chili, queso, sauce, seasonings, and salsas making it easy to build and ship the perfect gift anchored by Texas Tamales.

You can also find them on Facebook and Twitter. The company is great at interacting with their customers and make buying tamales easy and fun. They have been featured in The New York Times, The Food Network, and Texas Monthly.

Perfect Goody For: New parents for those first few months at home. The Tamales a La Carte PLUS would feed them for weeks and keep them happy and healthy.

The sauces were amazing

I've never been here before but have driven past it a thousand times. I decided to try the shrimp tacos and the chorizo and eggs. The sauces were amazing and I ended up ordering four because they were sooooo good. I moved here from Southern California and I love fish and shrimp tacos. These come the closest to just like home that I have had. I also picked up the Cilantro Salsa to try at home.

I love the Cilantro Sauce De Julia

I love the Cilantro Sauce De Julia. I order 12 jars every August so I can enjoy it while watching football games during the Fall.

The tamales are indeed quite delicious

I had the lunch special (4 tamales, can of soda, chili, queso, chips, rice and beans) for $5.95. That's a lot of food and it was very tasty. The tamales are indeed quite delicious. I tried the pork, beef and bean/spinach fillings, and by far my favorite was the pork. It was super tender, very flavorful and had a kick of heat. Rice beans and chips were nothing special and didn't taste homemade. There's only three tables here so take-out is probably the way to go.

The beef tamales were awesome!

The chicken tamales were ok, the pork were good, but the beef tamales were awesome. Those were seriously some of the best refried beans I've ever had (and I'm a huge refried bean fan). I usually forego Mexican rice since it's usually not my thing and can be too dry, but this rice was perfectly fluffy and seasoned well. The chili meat sauce was tasty but may have been missing something... maybe salt or a little spice, but good.

Overall I was impressed with the food! My mom is a fan of tamales and also loved the beef ones. I have yet to try the spinach, but I dropped some off at a friend's and she loved them. I also suggested to some veggie friends that they should check out Texas Tamale Company for spinach tamales. They asked if the refried beans were made with lard, but I didn't have an answer for them.

Everything Was Spectacular and Delicious

Everything was spectacular and delicious, and everyone ate everything right up. Now that I know where the physical location is, I'll definitely be stopping in more often. Thank you!

I love tamales

I've heard people talk about this place for years but have never been in. I figured that I needed to come by and pick up one of each flavor and give them a try. I'm really looking forward to trying these because I love tamales! Hope they are as good as everyone says. If so, I'll be back for more.

I love the beef tamales

I love the beef tamales. I first found out about this place after a TV show, showed them making them right here in Houston. I said "Hey, I know that place. I need to give them a try". I have always wanted to try one of everything on the menu but always end up with my favorite "Beef Tamales". I always hear people talking about this place and tell them how much I love it.

Our office comes in here all the time

Our office comes in here all the time to get the best breakfast tacos and tamales. We've been coming here a long time. Sometimes we order take out and bring back enough for the entire office. I like to buy the Salsa and take it home, we eat it on everything. I had no idea that they had all of these other products, can't wait to start trying them all.

I will be buying these again!

I have not been to the actual store but I have had the Texas Tamale Company Chile Con Queso dip and the Beef Tamales, and they are by far THE BEST I've had in any restaurant... fresh and definitely better than anything frozen I've ever eaten.

I got these at my local health food store and they were AWESOME!

I will be buying these again! I was very happy to find out it is Gluten-free as well!

I love this place!

I love this place. As the name suggests, they sell Tamales, however I'll admit it... I've never had one. It looks complicated, I mean do you eat the wrapping? I'm not from Texas so if anyone wants to explain this to me, feel free.

I love this place because EVERYTHING is made fresh. Everything. The best thing on the menu is by far the breakfast tacos. They are extremely delicious. They also give you unlimited free coffee during breakfast time with purchase. Granted it's not Starbucks, but it is free, and it is coffee.

The service is ok. It's counter style so it's not hard to mess up there. They sell their Tamales online and they have a great selection of other items. The place is small, so I'd probably plan on ordering to-go. If you're hungry during breakfast, I strongly suggest swinging by.

Their tamales are so good.

Their tamales are soooo good. I've seen this place on the Food Network before but never really knew where it was until I moved less than 5 minutes away. Their sauces are also really good. I want to try their breakfast tacos next.

Service is friendly and warm

Daily special is a "must have" at lunch. 4 Tamales, rice, beans, chips for 5.95 - definite try.

Service is friendly, warm.

Small place with only a few tables inside/outside. In a strip center and you can drive by the place, but make sure to stop!

We stopped in for lunch and weren't disappointed

We stopped in for lunch based on other Yelp recommendations and weren't disappointed in the least. Located in an easy-to-miss strip mall, the place is small and homey but offers fast friendly counter service. The tamales were fresh, the home-made sauces were delicious--we ordered the 4 tamale lunch special--and the price unbeatable.

I'm making a note to stop there for breakfast sometime when we're in the area again.

The price is unbeatable

The tamales were fresh, the homemade sauces were delicious--we ordered the 4-tamale lunch special and the price is unbeatable. I'm making a note to stop there for breakfast sometime, when we're in the area again.

By far the best in Houston!

I was introduced to the whole “breakfast taco” concept about 5 years ago when I moved to Texas. During that time I’ve tried about 20 different places ranging from fancy brunch spots to side of the road food trucks. Your breakfast tacos (with a bit of hot sauce) are by far the best in Houston!

I love the varieties of salsas

My 3 kids are the complete opposite when it comes to their food choices. I love the varieties of salsas you offer because I can appease all 3 in just one stop, which is rare!

Your gluten-free chicken tamales are the tastiest around

I’m certainly no health nut, but your gluten-free chicken tamales are not only the tastiest around, you can just tell they are cooked with extra care and are healthier than most options. Thanks for working with those of us that love good food, and have high hopes for bikini season!

The tacos were simple and fresh!

I tried the egg & potato, egg & chorizo, egg & sausage, machacado & egg, barbacoa & good old beans & cheese. All the tacos were simple and fresh! The spicy sauce is good too!!! All the tacos ran about $1.40 or so and they are generous with portions!!
