The Mexican Deli“How do you make tamales?" (713) 953-1181 We Cater! Texas Tamale Company
“The Mexican Deli" 3340 Fountain View Houston, Texas 77057 Fax (713) 953-9770 Hours: Our retail location, which doubles as a quintessential authentic Mexican restaurant, has been located in Houston since the late eighties, but the history dates back much farther. Grab a margarita, kick back and listen to our little story. Perhaps you’ll be inspired like we were. The story starts out with a wonderful native Texas couple with an unabashed love for tamales. It was their choice for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Whether it was a regular old weeknight or a candlelit anniversary dinner, tamales were their food of choice. Having eaten every variety in every part of the land, the wife soon grew concerned with the fat content they were consuming. Thanks to her innate Southern hospitality she often used to charm her friends and family, she decided she would start making her own homemade tamales. Not only would she soon perfect the art of tamale making, she tried many recipes and came up with a healthier option using vegetable shortening instead of lard and then added her own flair which gave them a signature-like quality that soon became a coveted commodity. Like a true Texan, she shared her new tamale wealth with all the neighbors who were soon “casually begging” for leftovers. One by one they would nonchalantly start putting in special requests, which she soon came to realize, were “special orders”. She and her husband also started to notice how loose the term neighbors became. They had people showing up at dinnertime from nearly 20 miles in either direction! A few neighbors inquired how much she would charge for extras, and soon they talked her into opening a small roadside cart on the corner of Farm to Market Road. As passersby (locals and tourists alike) started spreading the word to their friends and families about the local tamales for sale, the demand grew so much she could no longer use her regular household kitchen for cooking. Welcome 3340 Fountainview This was the new and permanent home of The Mexican Deli where the same Texas-inspired recipes (want to see more recipes?) have been used for decades. Our customers have come to know and love the consistency of our products in our retail location. Our customers also know we’re always all ears for their ideas and inspiration. We’ve been making breakfast tacos every morning since 1997 thanks to the request of a number of our patrons. We now sell anywhere from 100 to 300 breakfast tacos each morning from 7:30a-10:30a (or until we run out). The food is for the taking. Whether you want to pick up and go or dine-in, you’ll love our establishment. Consider yourselves warned – it’s so authentic you’ll want to wear a sombrero. Note – we use the term restaurant loosely here (we only have 3 tables and counter space).
